Tadesse Meskala, of the Ethiopian Oromia Coffee Cooperative
The Bridge of Allan Cubs displayed their muscles on Saturday, 12 March 2005, valiantly taking on eight tough rubgy players in the Unfair Tug of War, one of the highlights of this year's Fair Trade Fortnight. It was all to get the message of trade justice across: small poor nations are in a real life "unfair tug of war" with world trade rules stacked against them. The eight rugby players took on the role of the rich G8 nations for the day. One of the Bridge of Allan Cubs said "I was happy to take part and help make the point. The G8 has a real opportunity this year, during Britain’s presidency, to change things for the better."
Meanwhile, Fair Trade producer, Tadesse Meskala, from the Ethiopian Oromia Coffee Cooperative, gave a first hand account of Fair Trade in action at the Check Out Fair Trade Wine event at Stirling University. With support from the Coop, Traidcraft, Marks & Spencers, and others, people sampled a wide variety of fair trade wines now available online and in Stirling shops.
Catherine Lecouffe, who ran the event on behalf of the Stirling Fair Trade Propeller Group, said, "Until recently, Fair Trade wine could be pretty hard to track down in Stirling. We are delighted to announce that Sainsbury’s superstore and Peckhams delicatessen in the town centre have now joined the Coop in stocking fair trade wines. We hope to attract other major retailers soon too. We'd really like to see Fair Trade wine as widely available as Fair Trade tea and coffee."
